Maui Air Force Leaving

Maui Air Force

The only Air Force unit on Maui is quietly winding down its operations and moving off the island.

Detachment 424 of the U.S. Air Force is scheduled to be completely moved off Maui by the end of July. A total of 24 Air Force personnel are serving with the detachment, located at the former Puunene Hospital.

The detachment's activities are being phased out as a result of budget cutbacks.

Detachment 424, which is responsible directly to Air Force headquarters in Washington D.C., has been carrying out secret work on Maui for the past nine years.
