Maui Air Bargain
A new Maui firm is offering round-trip flights to Honolulu for almost half the price of other airlines.
Maui Air, Inc., of Kahului, is charging $12.96 for a one-way flight and $21.60 for a round trip to Honolulu.
In comparison, Royal Hawaiian Air Service charges $20 one-way and $40 round-trip. Hawaiian Airlines and Aloha Airlines both charge $19 one-way and $38 round-trip.
Scott Spangenberg of Maui Air said the company can afford to charge such low prices because of its limited scale of operations.
Spangenberg said the company, which has been on Maui for five months, employs a dozen persons and owns three Cessna airplanes.
In addition to the passenger service, Maui Air operates a flight school, a ground school, services aircraft and sells Cessna planes.
Passenger flights are offered twice daily, morning and evening, between Kahului and Honolulu. Passengers need not return to Maui the same day.
In comparison, Hawaiian Airlines offers 14 flights a day, Aloha Airlines, ten, and Royal Hawaiian, four.
Maui Air's nine-passenger planes make the flight between Maui and Oahu in 30 minutes, with another 10 to 15 minutes added for baggage handling.
